If pigeons have discovered your solar panels, they will not leave on their own. Pigeons are habitual nesters — once a pair establishes a site, they return to it season after season, and they attract others. A single pair under your panels this spring can be a flock of a dozen by next year.
The gap beneath a solar array is, from a pigeon's perspective, a purpose-built loft. It is warm, dry, sheltered from wind and rain, and safely out of reach of cats and foxes. The dark panel surfaces hold heat, so the air pocket underneath stays several degrees above the surrounding roof. For raising squabs (young pigeons), it is close to ideal.
Pigeons foul everything beneath and around them. Droppings accumulate on the panel glass, the frame and the roof, and they are acidic. Over time they etch glass, stain render and corrode the aluminium frame. Heavily soiled panels can lose 10–20% of their generating output, and the droppings are a slipping hazard and a public-health issue.
Pigeons peck and chew at the DC cables that connect your panels to the inverter. They strip the insulation, exposing live copper and causing ground faults that trip your inverter offline. A ground fault can silently reduce generation for weeks before it is noticed.
Pigeon nests are built from twigs, grass, straw and plastic scrap. Pressed against wiring and junction boxes, this dry material is a fire hazard. Combined with damaged insulation, a single arc can ignite a nest — and solar DC voltage is present whenever the panels are in daylight.
Pigeon droppings carry bacteria and fungal spores (including the organism that causes histoplasmosis). Dried droppings become airborne dust that can enter lofts and ventilation. For a home with children, pets or anyone with respiratory issues, an active pigeon population on the roof is a genuine concern.
The proven solution is a permanent physical barrier: a strip of stainless steel mesh fixed around the full perimeter of the array, sealing the gap beneath the panels. Because the mesh is clipped to the panel frame rather than the roof, there is no drilling and no scaffolding, and your roof and panel warranties stay intact.
Once the perimeter is sealed, pigeons cannot get back underneath the panels. They cannot nest, and the problem is solved permanently — not just for this season, but for the life of the system.
Cleaning removes the mess but does not solve the cause. Within weeks the pigeons will be back, the droppings will return, and you will be paying to clean again. Proofing is the one-time fix that stops the cycle. We can combine proofing with a panel clean so you start from a clean, protected baseline.
Stainless steel mesh is rated for 10–15+ years of outdoor use. It will not corrode, will not degrade in UV light, and — because it is fixed to the aluminium frame — it expands and contracts with the panels and will not work loose. For the vast majority of homes, pigeon proofing is a single, lifetime-of-the-system investment.
The biggest mistake is assuming the pigeons will leave. They will not — they will multiply. The second is trying to solve it with plastic netting or chicken wire, which corrodes, sags, and traps and injures birds. The third is cleaning without proofing, which treats the symptom but not the cause.

We remove existing nests, droppings and debris before fitting the mesh.
Stainless mesh is cut to your array's exact perimeter on site.
Mesh is clipped to the panel frame — no drilling, no roof contact.
We confirm the full edge is sealed so pigeons cannot return.
Avoid these costly errors when dealing with birds under your solar panels.
Pigeons are habitual nesters. They return to the same site each year and multiply. Waiting only increases the damage and cost.
It sags, tears in storms, and tangles and injures birds. It is also rarely fitted tightly enough to exclude pigeons.
Cleaning removes the mess but not the cause. The pigeons return within weeks. Always combine a clean with proofing.
Pigeons peck DC cable insulation. Have your cables checked when you proof to catch ground faults early.
Once a year, check from the ground that the mesh is intact and that no twigs or debris have gathered against the frame. Pigeons sometimes try to start a nest on top of the mesh — a quick brush-off by a roofer or cleaner keeps it clear.
If your panels were heavily soiled, we recommend a professional clean alongside the proofing so you start from a clean baseline. After that, an annual rinse is usually plenty.
If panels are ever removed, the mesh on that edge is unclipped and refitted afterwards. Keep any off-cuts — they are cut to length for your array.

Stop birds nesting under your solar panels with permanent, warranty-safe stainless steel mesh. No scaffolding, no drilling — installed by specialists.
Learn moreThe quality of your mesh — the material, the fixing method and the completeness of the seal — is what separates a one-time fix from a job that fails in a season. We install welded stainless steel mesh, fixed to the panel frame, never the roof.
