What Solar Panel Mesh Installation Actually Is

When we talk about "solar panel mesh installation", we mean fitting a continuous strip of metal mesh around the full perimeter of your solar array so that birds, squirrels and debris cannot get into the gap beneath the panels. It is the physical barrier that does the work — everything else (cleaning, deterrents, scarers) is secondary.

The quality of that barrier — the material, the fixing method, and the completeness of the seal — is the difference between a one-time fix that lasts the life of your system and a job that fails in a season.

The Material Matters More Than Anything

How the Mesh Is Fixed: Frame, Not Roof

This is the part most homeowners get wrong, and it is the most important detail. The mesh must be fixed to the aluminium frame of the solar panel, never to the roof.

Fixing to the roof means drilling into tiles, screwing into rafters or gluing to the felt — all of which risk leaks, void your roof warranty, and create a weak point that birds will exploit. Fixing to the panel frame means:

• No drilling — no new holes anywhere on your roof
• No tiles lifted — your roof warranty stays intact
• No contact with the roof surface — the mesh is bent to follow the edge and sits a few millimetres above the tiles

A single 5cm gap is enough for a pigeon to squeeze back in, so the install is only as good as its weakest point.

Clean-Out Before Proofing

If birds have already moved in, the mesh goes on after the gap is cleared. We remove nesting material, droppings, feathers and any dead birds, then fit the mesh so the area is clean and sealed. Fitting mesh over an active nest is both inhumane and, during the breeding season, against the law.
