"Pest control" around solar panels usually means one thing: dealing with birds — most often pigeons — that have moved into the gap beneath the array. Occasionally it also covers squirrels, which can do even more damage by chewing through cables and junction boxes.
Effective solar panel pest control is not about killing animals. It is about removing the problem and stopping it coming back. That means clearing the gap of nests, droppings and debris, and then installing a physical barrier so the pests cannot return.
The gap beneath a solar array is warm, dry, sheltered and safe from ground predators. For pigeons it is an ideal loft; for squirrels it is a secure nesting spot close to the roof void. Once established, both are persistent — pigeons return to the same site each season, and squirrels will chew their way back in if a gap is left open.
Pigeons peck and strip the insulation from DC cables, causing ground faults that trip the inverter and silently cut your generation. Squirrels are worse — their incisors grow continuously, so they chew on anything, including live cables and plastic junction boxes. Both build flammable nests pressed against wiring, increasing fire risk.
Droppings are acidic and etch panel glass and corrode aluminium frames. They also carry bacteria and fungal spores that can enter lofts and ventilation. Nesting material blocks gutters and valleys, causing water to back up under tiles.
The humane, permanent and legally sound approach is exclusion. We:
No poison, no inhumane traps, no leaving dead animals in the roof. The pests are excluded and move on.
Squirrels under solar panels need the same exclusion approach, but they are more determined. They will chew through plastic netting and weak mesh, so a proper stainless barrier is essential. We also check for and advise on any gaps into the loft that squirrels are using — because if they can reach the panels, they may also be reaching the roof void.
The stainless mesh barrier is rated for 10–15+ years and is fixed to the panel frame, so no drilling and no roof contact. Your panel and roof warranties stay intact, and the exclusion is, for almost every home, a lifetime-of-the-system fix. Every install carries a 10-year workmanship guarantee.
The most common mistake is reaching for poison or traps, which deal with individual animals but not the cause — the accessible gap. New birds or squirrels simply move in to replace them. The second is attempting a DIY fix with chicken wire, which squirrels chew through and which rusts. The third is treating the symptom (cleaning) without proofing the gap, so the pests return within weeks.
Once the gap is cleared and the mesh barrier is fitted, upkeep is minimal — an annual visual check that the mesh is intact and the edge is clear. For squirrels, keep an eye on any roof gaps that could allow re-entry to the loft.

Avoid these costly errors when dealing with birds under your solar panels.
Pigeons are habitual nesters. They return each season and multiply. Waiting increases the damage and the clean-up cost.
Poisoning is inhumane, often illegal, and leaves dead birds in the roof void. Exclusion with mesh is the humane, permanent solution.
Traps deal with individual birds but not the cause. New birds move in to replace them. You must exclude access to the gap.
Pest control that doesn't include proofing the gap means the birds return within weeks. Always combine clearance with a physical barrier.
Once a year, confirm the mesh barrier is intact and the edge of the array is clear of debris.
Check any roof gaps — soffits, broken tiles, vents — that could allow squirrels into the loft void, and have them sealed. If squirrels can reach the panels, they may also be reaching the roof space.
Overhanging branches give squirrels access to the roof. Trim them back to reduce the route onto the array.
